Natsuki Koshimizu (越水 七槻, Koshimizu Natsuki?), a Famous High School Detective who is also known as the "Detective Of The South" (南 の 探偵, Minami No Tantei?), is a minor character in the manga and anime franchise Detective Conan. Natsuki claims to have solved more than 100 murder cases. To uncover the background to a case from her past in which a good friend of hers died, Natsuki organizes a detective competition. In this competition, she represents the high school student detective for southern Japan. During the competition, she killed the Detective of the North, Junya Tokitsu, whom she blames for the death of her friend due to the latter incorrect deduction.
Appearance[]
During her crossing to the island where the contest will take place, Natsuki is dressed like a boy and acts casual. She wears long persimmon pants, a dark jacket, sunglasses and headphones. She does not remove either during the interview. She is from Fukuoka, is 20 years old, and has already finished high school. However, during the contest, she introduces herself as an 18-year-old high school detective. She has short brown hair and is pierced at the ears, which she carefully tries to hide.
During the competition, she wears her old school uniform. A long skirt that reaches three to five inches above her knees, neckerchief, carefully tied symmetrically, and black socks.

Background[]
About a year before the detective competition, a death occurred in a country house on Shikoku. The lady was found hanged in one of the rooms of her house. The room was locked and the cause of death unknown. Natsuki's best friend was working as a maid in the country house at the time and was soon suspected by an "upperclassman detective with a strange accent" of having murdered the landlady.
The lady of the house had killed herself. She was addicted to pills and had been intending to kill herself for some time. The butler, Renzo Kenya, concealed this fact from the press and the police in order to honour the name of his former mistress. At the request of her friend, Natsuki travelled to the country house, which was decorated all over with flowering lavender, and examined the crime scene. There were no traces that pointed to another perpetrator and she also came to the conclusion that it was a suicide.
The clues that Junya Tokitsu found a few months later during his investigation actually came from a second case. Hiro Tsuchio was a small-time burglar and had prepared one of the windows in the lavender house so that he could break into the house unnoticed. It happened to be the room in which the lady of the house had hanged herself at the time. Tokitsu, however, attributed the window trick to the maid, who then became the police's prime suspect. She could not withstand the police's many interrogations for long and finally threw herself off a cliff.
Canon Plot Overview[]
Natsuki blamed the death of her best friend on the high school detective whose wrong conclusions turned a suicide into a murder. Since the detective kept his name secret at the time, she had few clues about him. She knew that he has a peculiar pronunciation that suggests a strong dialect or a long stay abroad. Moreover, the detective seems to have good relations with the police. She therefore had the idea of organising a detective competition to bring together the famous high school detectives Junya Tokitsu, Heiji Hattori and Saguru Hakuba. For the competition, she also hired the former butler Kenya and the day labourer Tsuchio, whom she blamed for her friend's death. She disguised the competition as a television event for Nichiuri TV.
Natsuki did not plan for her or any of the others present to leave the island again. So she threatened the boatman who brought everyone to the island that he would only get his promised money if he did not pick up the group and did not talk to anyone on the mainland about the crossing. She felt sorry that Conan Edogawa, a primary school pupil, also seemed to be trapped on the island with them. The island itself is remote and without mobile phone reception.
The house where the competition took place was made up by Natsuki to look very much like the lavender house in Shikoku. She is sure that the detective who was investigating the Lavender House at the time would be immediately reminded of the case. Through this, she found out that the detective from Hokkaido is the man she was looking for. She killed him with a hammer while the other characters were having dinner. Later, at dinner, she turned the topic to the Lavender House case so that the other two detectives can also make a connection and, moreover, Tsuchio and Kenya got a motive.
In the end, she unintentionally betrayed herself. Heiji and Hakuba engaged in a heated deduction duel, repeatedly citing reasons why Kenya or Tsuchio must be the murderer. Then Heiji suspected that he had found one of the screws that fall off as a by-product of the window trick. The perpetrator's fingerprints were probably on it. Natsuki then wanted to check the screws she collected in the pocket of her school uniform. By doing so, she gave away the hiding place at the same time. Heiji grabbed her arm and forced her to reveal the contents of her bag. After being discovered as the killer, Natsuki accepted to turn herself in and and let the boat carry her to the mainland to carry out the procedure for her arrest.
Trivia[]
- The name Natsuki can be both a girl's or a boy's name. That is why Conan and Heiji are a little surprised when they see Natsuki in her school uniform.
- Natsuki was extremely popular with fans, there was even an offer to develop a video game with her as the protagonist, but this had to be rejected due to her status as a criminal. Instead, Gosho Aoyama decided to introduce a new character who also fit the archetype of the tomboyish female detective who could easily be mistaken for a boy. This character ended up being Masumi Sera, who was introduced five years after Natsuki's appearance in the manga.
- According to the current laws in Japan, Natsuki will be sentenced to imprisonment for more than 10 years or life in prison. That means she will have to spend more than 10 years in prison before she can be considered for a reduced sentence.
- Natsuki is still likely to be considered for the death penalty because she has self-destructive behavior and wants everyone on the island to die with her.
